In the summer of 2019, when Kashmir was still an "integral part of India" and not yet an integrated part of India, I was floating around Dal Lake on a shikara. A student beckoned me to take a picture of him and his buddies, and in one split Kashmiri instant, it all came together. He shouted out his whatsapp number to me, digit by digit, as our boats drifted apart. We kept in touch until one fair and foul day in August his number went cold.
